Did you know Ted Roosevelt was a coach?
On April 23rd, 1910, Theodore Roosevelt delivered a memorable speech called “Citizenship In A Republic” at the Sorbonne, in Paris, France. The speech, also known as “The Man In the Arena”, can be read here.
Re-reading the speech for probably the 10th time, I realized, Roosevelt was a coach.
Students will often hear our founder Nathalie Blais say: “coaching is a mindset”; what Roosevelt referred to as “character”. Roosevelt believed in, and spoke about, the core principles in coaching: self-restraint, self-mastery, the power of ownership and responsibility, and courage to step into the arena.
Coaches live in the arena. They are men and women like you, who know great enthusiasm, great devotion; who lend themselves to a worthy cause; who at best know the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if they fail, at least fail while daring greatly (Roosevelt, 1910).
Coaches dare greatly by challenging others to build resilience by taking responsibility for their impact. They help people become resourceful to build self-confidence and self-esteem through awareness, reflection and choice.
As Nancy Kline wrote: the mind that holds the problem, also holds the solution. Help others dare greatly by giving them the gift of self-empowerment.
